Present the first microprocessor organic

previous week was carried out International Conference on Solid-State Circuits in San Francisco, USA. UU. As expected in this kind of event, presented progress on semiconductor technologies, those that are behind the microprocessors that serve as the engine for our computers. Well, on this occasion was also released the first microprocessor created with organic semicoductores , the first made of plastic .

What are your specs? Basically
  • has 4,000 transistors. Approximately the same as an Intel 8080 1974.
  • logic works with 8 bits. Run
  • 6 instructions per second
  • And can bend.
What use is having a flexible microprocessor? Many, as you can imagine with a chip to adapt their ways to the place where it will be placed. An interesting application is flexible displays.
However, there are drawbacks. Made of silicon transistors are "better behaved" than organic. In fact, organic is unpredictable under certain conditions. In other words, it is difficult to determine how much voltage is required to change bit 0 to bit 1, and vice versa. To resolve this issue, the researchers added extra logic gates for each transistor.
The microprocessor is composed of several layers:
  • A substrate thickness of 25 micrometers fact polyethylene terephthalate, a very flexible plastic known as PET.
  • top, there is a circuit of 25 nanometers thickness made of gold.
  • Above, an organic insulation.
  • Another layer of circuitry made of gold.
  • And finally a layer made of an organic semiconductor pentacene.
The result was tested successfully with a program to calculate averages. Its creators working in the Imec , a Dutch research center in nanoelectronics and nanotechnology specialist, with an area dedicated to organic electronics . It is hoped that this work opens the door to a new generation of applications with great influence in everyday life.
